Next generation Plasma engines

Conventional Chemical rockets generate thrust by burning chemical fuel.New next generation electric rockets produce thrust by applying electric or electromagnetic fields to clouds of charged particles, or plasmas, to accelerate them.
First of all what is Plasma?
According to physics and chemistry Plasma refers to a gas in which a certain portion of the particles hav been ionized. It is electrically conductive so it responds to electromagnetic fields.Due to its unique properties plasma is considered as the 4th sate of matter.Ionization is nessacary if plasma is to exist.

A plasma propulsion engine is a type of ion thruster which uses plasma in some or all parts of the thrust generation process.Athough these engines are far less powerfull then conventional rocket engines, they are very efficent. In recent years many countries and big companies are inveting and researching on plasma technology. The high speed capabilities combined with there incredibly high efficiency makes them an ideal choice for powering rockets for deep space missions. Here are a few types of plasma engines
Helicon double layer thruster.uses radio waves to create plasma
Magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters.Uses Lorentze force to generate thrust
Hall effect thrusters
Electrodless plasma thrusters. Use the ponderomotive force which acts on any plasma or charged particle when under the influence of a strong electromagnetic energy gradient to accelerate the plasma.

NASA is serioulsy considering Plasma rocket engines for its space probes and for taking man to Mars
